IG I(3) 79: Decree to Bridge the Rhetos in Eleusis

The following translation was made by Alex Mo as part of an ancient Greek course at The Lawrenceville School in 2024-2025. It was reviewed by Krateros Project Co-Directors Aaron Hershkowitz and Angelos Chaniotis.

Prepis son of Eupheros was the secretary.
It seemed best to the council and the people;
Aigeis held the prytany, Prepis was the
Secretary, Patrokles was presiding,
Theaios proposed: to have a bridge made over
the Rhetos, the one beside the city, using stones
From Eleusis, the ones taken down
From the old temple, which were left over
By the ones building the wall, so that
The priestesses may bear the sacred objects
Most safely. And the bridge should be five feet
In width, so that wagons may not be driven
Across but it be possible for those going for
The sacred objects to walk. And with stones
To cover up the channels of the Rhetos
Just as Demomeles the architect wrote down.
